About Advancing Women in Healthcare Leadership

A 2-minute snapshot of the Advancing Women in Healthcare national initiative

Dr Belinda Garth | Senior Research Fellow & Translation Lead

The healthcare sector is an interconnected web of stakeholders, including state and federal government, public and private facilities, training providers, accreditation services and member organisations. It is therefore essential that a systematic approach is taken to achieve a sustainable impact on the advancement of women in healthcare leadership positions.

Advancing Women in Healthcare Leadership (AWHL) is based at the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation (MCHRI), Monash University. We are a large-scale national research, implementation and impact initiative supported by two National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Partnership Project grants and partner contributions. Together in coproduction with our partners AWHL is generating a knowledge base and delivering multi-faceted organisational and individual level interventions that measurably improve career progression for women in healthcare.

AWHL recognise that women are not a homogenous group. We intend to understand the impact of intersecting social identities on women’s journeys to leadership in healthcare.

Without leaders that reflect the diversity of the Australian community the healthcare industry will continue to perpetuate an inequitable health system
